^what he said

(automated translation) There is no need to start by making this unnecessarily complicated. Anyone on a political stage giving a political speech in front of a partly right-wing extremist audience who raises their right arm in a swinging manner and at an angle several times is doing the Hitler salute. There is no need for “supposed” or “similar” or “controversial”. The gesture speaks for itself, it is documented in the video. Anyone who then wants to reinterpret it, whoever doesn't want to see the Hitler salute, does so at their own expense.ALT

“One doesn’t need to make things unnecessarily complicated at the outset. He who raises his right arm at a slant forcefully and repeatedly while standing on a political stage at a political speech in front of a partially extreme right public is performing the Hitler salute. There is no need for ‘allegedly’ or 'similar’ or 'debated’. The gesture speak for itself, it is documented on video. Whoever then wants to reinterpret it, whoever doesn’t want to see (i.e., refuses to recognize) the Hitler salute, does so on their own behalf.”

(sorry I am really bad at translating but this is roughly what it says, for my non-German speaking mutuals)

A lot of South Africans were – and apparently still are – Nazi sympathizers.

I love the cow poking its head around the building.

I spent 6 weeks in Scotland during grad school (1979) and would love to go back – if I could walk longer and farther and better.

Fun Story to Share.

I got my (now 18-year-old) daughter into Ao3 back in 2021. I taught her she should always comment - even if the fic looks old or abandoned or whatever. She did.

Well - she got this email this morning:

image

The fic was written in 2014 and essentially abandoned.

Bethy read and reviewed in 2021 (and was actually the only person who had commented at all).

Today in 2025 - the final chapter was posted by the author and this was her reply to Bethy’s comment.

———

Never question whether a fic is too old to comment on.

Trump paused communications from all of our health agencies. He wants them reviewed.

You will be much less likely to know from now on during the early days if we have something like the current rising bird flu epidemic. You will be less likely to know about any illness epidemics. Even once things are confirmed and being reported in some media outlets, there’s a non-zero chance that you are not going to see any urgency or any communication at all from places you are used to.

For the love of little green apples, please start masking again. Please be more careful with your health then you have been over the last 4 years.

There’s a “public health” feed on Bsky. I’ve got it pinned to my home page. I got through Covid largely due to the efforts of researchers and healthcare providers that I followed on a curated list on Twitter.

Since the WaPo source is under a pay/account wall and tbh, I don’t trust them as a source for this president, here are some non-paywalled sources:

Of course they want to spin everything. COVID was the thing Tmp fouled up spectacularly. Science scares those on the right. They don’t understand it, they can’t affect the truth of it, so they have to lie and cheat and abuse it to those who never studied science.

Science relies on facts. If you can obscure the facts, you can obscure the truth and fool the fools.

Move along, nothing to see here. Just blizzards in Florida + record snowfall in Mississippi and Louisiana + climate change.

meanwhile we got barely any snow in Minnesota. this is fucked y'all

Yep, right, go ahead say climate change is a hoax. You can also say the sun rises in the west – that’s just about as right as the first claim.

You know, rivers catching on fire used to be a regular occurrence.

Boring, even. Mundane. People just accepted that rivers had oil slicks floating on them that could be lit by somebody throwing their cigarette in the wrong place. Cities had regular protocols in place on what to do when the river caught on fire.

The modern environmentalism movement wasn’t just started by hippies you know. Regular people cared about this stuff because their rivers caught on fire and existing near farms gave them cancer and by the 1970s they weren’t even seeing that much economic benefit from it.

If you don’t live in a world where rivers regularly catch on fire it’s because of stuff like the clean water and air acts. A lot of rivers in the US that in the first half of the 20th century regularly caught on fire are now safe to swim and fish in.

A lot of environmental damage is reversible if we act. We’ve got a lot of success stories like this actually. A lot of formerly endangered species have come back, fish have returned to American rivers, the ozone layer is being restored.

I’m not sure what’s going to happen next with the environment but I hold out at least a little bit of hope. Because rivers used to catch on fire and now for the most part they don’t.

We need to keep working on the environment. Maybe our billionaires can move to the moon or to Mars, but we can’t.

is no one going to comment on his pin-up girl pose??

Was rewatching this episode and instinctively yelled WERK DIVAAAAAAAAAAAA as soon as this scene came up

The TOS Kirk was not a womanizer. In the Academy, he was described as a stack of books on legs.

Yes, there were a lot of episodes where he became involved with women, but many of those never got to the bedroom or even a convenient pile of hay in a barn. IIRC, at least 2 of them he married and they then died.

The rewritten Kirk of the NuTrek movies is a fascinating character – but he’s not the original Kirk. He’s a fanboy’s wet dream of a Captain Kirk.

They didn’t introduce a bill to just repeal the $35 cap on insulin.

They introduced a bill to repeal the entire Inflation Reduction Act.

Which, among other things, means they want to get rid of:

  • the $35 insulin cap.
  • And a yearly cap of $2,000 for medications in Medicare Part D.
  • And allowing Medicare to negotiate for drug prices.
  • And requiring pharma companies to issue refunds to Medicare if the costs of their drugs rises faster than inflation
  • And an elimination of copays in Medicare Part D for vaccines like tetanus and rabies
  • And an expansion of eligibility for low-income subsidies for Medicare

Saying they want to eliminate just the insulin cap is understating their desire to fuck people over.

Republicans want everyone who ISN’T them to suffer.

This is what other people voted for.

Not me.

I know I’ve been really quiet lately, but my thyroid has gone off the rails, and I am so tired I can barely keep my head up. Which is what happens when your thyroid goes off, you don’t have to do anything to feel tired, you just want to sleep 14 hours a day.

I have to finish a big project and make major lifestyle changes. Hope to be more lively in the coming year, but priorities for now.

Wishing you all the best in the New Year.

Briana Boston faces terrorism charges and CEOs are getting free therapy

image

Briana Boston is a 42 year old mother of three from Florida who is under house arrest for expressing her frustration at her insurance (which she PAYS for) who denied her claim. She owns ZERO guns and doesn’t have a criminal record.

She was originally held in prison for $100,000 bail. They have not dropped the charges and she is under house arrest even after widespread backlash.

They are trying to charge her with terrorism. They want her to spend 15 years in prison.

They are calling her a Luigi Mangione copycat. As if she killed someone. She made a indirect, not at all credible threat.

Meanwhile…

image

I want every woman who has ever faced threats online, stalking, etc to bring this Briana Boston up at every opportunity. Every time you were told by police that there was nothing they could do, know that they not only CAN do something, but they WILL do something, just not for you.

SO HERE IS THE WHOLE STORY (SO FAR).

I am on my knees begging you to reblog this post and to stop reblogging the original ones I sent out yesterday. This is the complete account with all the most recent info; the other one is just sending people down senselessly panicked avenues that no longer lead anywhere.

IN SHORT

Cliff Weitzman, CEO of Speechify and (aspiring?) voice actor, used AI to scrape thousands of popular, finished works off AO3 to list them on his own for-profit website and in his attached app. He did this without getting any kind of permission from the authors of said work or informing AO3. Obviously.

When fandom at large was made aware of his theft and started pushing back, Weitzman issued a non-apology on the original social media posts—using

  • his dyslexia;
  • his intent to implement a tip-system for the plagiarized authors; and
  • a sudden willingness to take down the work of every author who saw my original social media posts and emailed him individually with a ‘valid’ claim,

as reasons we should allow him to continue monetizing fanwork for his own financial gain.

When we less-than-kindly refused, he took down his ‘apologies’ as well as his website (allegedly—it’s possible that our complaints to his web host, the deluge of emails he received or the unanticipated traffic brought it down, since there wasn’t any sort of official statement made about it), and when it came back up several hours later, all of the work formerly listed in the fan fiction category was no longer there.

THE TAKEAWAYS

1. Cliff Weitzman (aka Ofek Weitzman) is a scumbag with no qualms about taking fanwork without permission, feeding it to AI and monetizing it for his own financial gain;

2. Fandom can really get things done when it wants to, and

3. Our fanworks appear to be hidden, but they’re NOT DELETED from Weitzman’s servers, and independently published, original works are still listed without the authors’ permission. We need to hold this man responsible for his theft, keep an eye on both his current and future endeavors, and take action immediately when he crosses the line again.

Jimmy Carter, who turned 100 recently, said that he just wanted to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris.

Yesterday, early voting opened in Georgia, and among the first-day voters was former president Jimmy Carter, casting his vote.

I got unexpectedly emotional about this.

Just an aside…in 2020, the first-day voting in Georgia set a state record with 136,000 voters. Guess how many people voted early in Georgia yesterday?

328,000.

God bless Jimmy Carter.
